Having Conversations that Work
Transform your personal and professional relationships through effective communication
Think of all the conversations you have each day. Have you ever wondered why some go smoothly, while others end in frustration, conflict, and misunderstanding? Imagine how much easier your life would be if you could transform each difficult interaction into an open, responsive dialogue. In this two-day workshop, you’ll learn to do just that.
Communication: Where do we go wrong?
So much of our success and fulfillment in life depends on our ability to communicate — it forms the foundation for our intimate relationships, our bonds with family and friends, our effectiveness at work, and our ability to achieve our personal and professional goals. But all too often conversations break down, despite our best attempts to understand and be understood. Think of any time you’ve asked a seemingly simple question and wound up in an argument or a long, unproductive debate.
What throws us off-track? Whenever we’re fighting or feeling misunderstood, the solution usually lies in how we’re talking, not what we’re talking about. We typically run into trouble not because of irreconcilable differences, but because of the ways in which we express ourselves. Without even knowing it, we send signals that communicate aggression, defensiveness, or unwillingness to listen — and we respond instinctively to these signals in others. Once we learn to understand these signals, the challenge of communication becomes easier to manage.
SAVI®: A road to mutual understanding
SAVI®, the System for Analyzing Verbal Interaction, is a unique and powerful tool for improving communication in all aspects of life. For nearly 30 years, this method has helped individuals, couples, and groups to reduce conflict, increase understanding and collaboration, and improve decision making.
SAVI® is straightforward to understand, providing simple techniques for describing and mapping all aspects of a conversation. By studying this method, you learn to differentiate between the content of communication — WHAT you’re trying to say — and HOW it is said. SAVI® enables you to clearly identify which behavior patterns strain relationships and which ones foster receptivity. It’s a constructive, nonjudgmental approach.
The workshop: A comprehensive introduction
During this two-day workshop, you’ll learn how to analyze communication patterns and identify problematic behaviors in yourself and in others. In small groups, you’ll practice intervening in unproductive discussions and fostering positive, satisfying conversations. You’ll leave the workshop with powerful new skills you can use right away.
