Our Approach
Our approach: Making natural leadership a way of life
There’s nothing mysterious about effective leadership. Remarkable leaders make their presence felt immediately.
Great leadership can be easily seen. Effective leaders are dynamically engaged with those around them. They radiate a sense of ease, poise, and self-confidence. Their charisma attracts attention and commands respect.
Great leaders use language to galvanize and inspire. A true leader communicates clearly and assertively, responding to feedback with insight and sensitivity. Leaders are able to articulate a vision and enroll others to collaborate effectively.
Great leadership can be found in strategic acumen. Faced with any new challenge, an effective leader skillfully analyzes the situation, pinpoints the most critical issues, and takes decisive action. Leaders can facilitate others to offer divergent points of view in the service of effectively managing change, insulating risk, and maximizing inclusion.
Great leadership can be measured. Exceptional leaders inspire their colleagues and employees to reach new levels of creativity and productive collaboration. Open to new ideas and opportunities, they and their team generate novel and effective solutions. These leadership practices enable cost efficiencies, synergies and innovation that generates greater profitability and promise for the companies they lead.
The guidance of one great leader can transform an organization by inspiring imaginative decision making, effective communication, value creation, and outstanding teamwork.
Research on leadership development suggests that spotting emerging leadership talent and honing it through skill building, peer interaction, and coaching maximizes the chance that an individual’s innate leadership will come to fruition. For others, their technical or subject matter expertise situates them to play a vital management role within their company, and training in the interpersonal domain may provide the pivotal element of their success.
For both types of organizational leaders, leadership is more than a task to perform; it requires a commitment to development both professionally and personally. Over time, leadership emerges as a steady way of being, both in and out of the office. At Mobius, it is our mission to help executives become natural leaders in every sphere of their lives.
Unique to the Mobius approach to leadership is a focus on the health and well-being of executives. For us, natural leadership requires a sense of vitality, energy management, and physical health. Using time-tested mind/body techniques and state-of-the-art medical knowledge, we work with individuals to achieve optimal health and hone communication and self-management skills for the challenges ahead.
If you know you have the potential to galvanize others or make a meaningful contribution to the work of your organization, Mobius can build on the leadership qualities you possess, and help you to foster the tools and habits to make natural leadership a way of life.
The Foundations: Research-based Best Practices
There’s no need for guesswork in defining great leadership. In the professional sphere, decades of research clearly indicate which strategies are most effective in resolving disputes, fostering creativity, creating a cooperative environment, and achieving lasting change.
All of our corporate training offerings have their foundations in well-researched scholarship theory, largely from the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Negotiation Essentials, Masterful Conversations, and Resolving Conflict all offer participants a window into best practices in the arenas of relationship management, negotiation, effective communication, and coordinated action. Mobius Executive Leadership offers one- and two-day on-site corporate trainings designed to enhance individual skill, provide a common organizational framework, and increase corporate capacity in these areas.
Our expertise derives from fluency with the models and ideas generated by the work of the Harvard Negotiation Project (HNP) for high-performing negotiators. Other sources of Mobius Intensive curriculum include the System for Analyzing Verbal Interaction (SAVI®); Systems Theory; Emotional Intelligence theory; and groundbreaking work on maximizing follow-through. The methods we use have been tried and tested with great success in the global business community.
Our corporate training offerings afford companies a chance to develop the individual skill of key employees while expanding organizational capacity in vital arenas such as negotiation, conflict resolution, and managing business-critical conversations. Our one- and two-day on-site training programs are often complemented by executive coaching to support ongoing professional development.
In addition to our knowledge of effective leadership skills, we bring extensive expertise in guiding participants towards healthy lifestyle patterns that can support good leadership and foster effective self-management. These health factors — such as nutritional balance, physical fitness, and freedom from chronic pain or injury — directly affect any professional’s job performance, but are neglected by most corporate training programs.
Clearly, a severe case of management burnout can decrease productivity and weaken an organization. But breakdowns that occur at a lower level are often overlooked. Managers suffering from fatigue have difficulty keeping their employees motivated and engaged. CEOs experiencing high levels of stress cannot inspire confidence and openness to change. No executive in distress is a successful decision maker. Only an energetic, dynamic professional can manage effectively in a complex, fast-paced organizational culture. To achieve peak performance, an individual must be in optimal health. To win in the marketplace, a company needs vital and strong leadership.
In the Mobius Leadership Intensive, our flagship offering, experts in integrative health build upon the latest medical research to develop individualized assessments, treatments, and follow-up coaching agreements. Our practitioners have extensive experience in achieving work/life balance and promoting clients’ overall health and well-being. The benefits are immediately apparent in the workplace: Personal wellness translates directly into professional confidence and competence.
Mobius Executive Leadership places an enormous premium on follow-through and long-term organizational change. To ensure that the Leadership Intensive is not a stand-alone experience for an executive, we strongly recommend that participants take advantage of the six-month coaching option to gain support and guidance in carrying forward their goals and self-maintenance program.
In tandem, these ideas and best practices in communication, collaboration, and self-maintenance form the foundation for authentic, powerful leadership that is both sustainable and inspiring.
Core Concepts
Negotiation and Resolving Conflict
Effectively managed businesses bring a systematic approach to handling internal and external negotiations and teach employees how to address and manage conflict.
Based on the tools and ideas developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project, the Mobius approach focuses on collaborative skills and tools for optimizing negotiation results. Organizational improvement in these arenas can have a significant impact on morale, productivity, creativity, and the financial outcomes of negotiations. The Mobius model builds participants’ skills in the arenas of negotiation, resolving differences, expressing dissent, managing up, managing without authority, and dealing with difficult tactics in business transactions.
Communication
Incisive, honest, and respectful communication cultivates trust, efficiency, and creative synergy.
The quality of conversations in the workplace is a prime driver of business success and growth. Companies fail to capitalize on business opportunities when patterns of communication inhibit decision making, creativity, and constructive disagreement. Ambiguity, redundancy, conflict avoidance, and contradictory messages make it impossible for teams of people to work effectively to solve critical business challenges.
Business units struggle not because they lack the requisite knowledge and expertise to innovate and evaluate solutions, but because they don’t know how to talk to one another. With refined skills and operational models for effective communication, professionals can foster productive conversations by spearheading an open, mature, and well-functioning organizational climate. The Mobius model builds participants’ skills in the arenas of interpersonal communication, diversity, complex decision making, relationship management, and team collaboration.
Personal/Professional Synergy
Choices respecting an individual’s personal and professional dimensions lead to dynamic balance, optimal performance, and visionary long-term leadership.
The Mobius Executive Leadership model sees a business leader as a complete person. Beginning with inner renewal and development, the program supports unencumbered thinking, deep personal satisfaction, and productive professional relationships.
Vision
A developed personal vision and professional perspective that fosters an individual’s connection to his or her core values energizes, guides, and supports insightful leadership judgment.
Aligned to an individual’s sense of purpose is his or her emotional well-being, mental focus, and connection with others. Connecting personal aspirations with professional missions galvanizes enthusiasm and resourcefulness. The Mobius Executive Leadership model regards personal vision as the fuel for vitality, inspiration, big-picture understanding, and productivity.
Health
An individual’s state of health influences his or her patterns of thought.
Thriving organizations are composed of people who have all their energy, intelligence, creativity, and vigor available for the work at hand. Professionals who attend to their own habits of health and self-care are better able to take bold action in enacting their organizational missions. The Mobius Executive Leadership model provides leaders with the expert information, coaching, and support they need to break longstanding destructive habits and learn to take optimal care of themselves going forward.
Sustainable Work/Life Leadership
Leadership principles, models, and strategies are relevant only to the degree that they are sustainable.
All too often our personal and professional resolutions — even those most important to us — dissolve in the reality of competing demands, tight deadlines, difficult personalities, and intense pressure at work and at home. To help ensure follow-through, Mobius Executive Leadership has created a training model that builds on each person’s strengths and addresses his or her unique challenges in the terrain of ethics, values, and self-care. Participants leave the Intensive with a clear plan for integrating their customized programs into their work and life. Establishing and maintaining work/life balance enables them to stay firm in their resolve to build the kind of life they want. Sustainable practices allow participants to return to work and lead their organizations to achieve optimal functioning. Follow-up coaching is a time-tested resource for ensuring that these changes and lifestyle commitments take hold despite ongoing pressures and demands. |
